URBAN SCUBA
Boldly melding dance, circus, and gravity-defying physicality, URBAN SCUBA is off-the-wall choreography—a dreamlike dive into society’s past and present. Driven by a pulsating electro-rock score, the work transports audiences into the abandoned buildings and cavernous substrata of an Any-City USA, where six fearless explorers re-purpose society’s leftovers in playful, high-flying ways: dancing on spinning ladders and bicycle parts, swaying window-washing platforms, gliding like aquarium fish on a garment rack, high-diving into an actual dumpster, and scaling a chain-link fence with daring and beauty.
URBAN SCUBA’s upside-down aquatic world is both an audience thrill-ride and a transformative dance-theater experience, revealing urban grittiness in new and wondrous images. The show continually transforms once-lost worlds, dreams, and discarded materials into dance, illusion, and theatrical beauty.
A show built for the performing arts market, Urban Scuba is a self-contained, high-impact production combining dance, acrobatics, video, an original score, and dynamic lighting to turn your venue into an otherworldly underwater environment. It offers cross-disciplinary appeal (dance / physical theatre / circus / object work), tours efficiently with six performers and three technicians, and can expand with student programming and a study guide. Striking visual branding and collateral support robust marketing and PR.
Why this work matters: Urban Scuba reframes unwanted refuse as creative potential—turning discarded objects into engines of beauty and meaning. The work fosters personal connection as audiences recognize familiar transformed materials and leave with a renewed sense of possibility, shifting environmental anxiety into imagination.
URBAN SCUBA is a visually inventive and culturally resonant aerial dance-theater performance composed of 23 dynamic vignettes, asking: What happens when we treat our cultural “leftovers” not as trash, but as possibility? Artistic and imagistic, the show runs without intermission and features high-flying aerial work enhanced by dynamic lighting and projections that create evolving, immersive environments—from magical interactions with light to a watery overhead-camera “slip and slide” finale. The production fully activates vertical space with a custom aerial rig and blends acrobatics with inventive partnering shaped by Brian Sanders’ classical training and 15 years with MOMIX. Performed by a cast of six diverse dancers, Urban Scuba reinforces its central theme throughout: transforming discarded materials into creative possibility.
